How to Use the Kids Almanac

Memorizing poetry is more than learning lines, it teaches your child to articulate, consider pacing, word choice, spelling and writing. History

The answers to the history questions are in the PDF. You may also further explore those tidbits by having your child simply Google the subject or write a book report on a subject, time in history or other rabbit holes they went down when researching.

History for Kids – A free online history network packed with articles, worksheets and, best part, a quiz on each section. There are also worksheets, videos, games to help kids get more involved with subjects and events.

National Geographic for Kids – This has been a great find for kids of all ages. Pair it with Disney Plus and the free study unit packets they have to bring a lot of new fun into your homeschooling.

Moon Phases

Take note of the phases of the moon and the weather. Note the day of each quarter and full moon.

NASA – How to study the moon and its phases with activities, study units and detailed articles. Take some time to explore if you are at all interested in studying the moon and you will find some great surprises.

Earth Sky – Different ways to explore the different phases of the moon and its relationship to the Earth and Sun.

Weather

Compare the amount of rainfall or snow days to last year and tie that into how weather affects the trees, the garden, animals, climate issues or other interests your child has about nature. It can help your child to take notice of the seasons, the natural world and discover new ideas through riddles, poems and historical facts.

Earth Networks – Tips on how to study weather, ways to incorporate the study of weather into your homeschool and lesson ideas.

Farmer’s Almanac – A wealth of information on much more than weather, and a good read on how they predict weather, definition of different types of weather and where and why it occurs.

Poetry

We do a poem each month to help with memorization, oral language and speaking. The kids practice reciting a line at a time to build skills.

Mensa for Kids – If you haven’t found Mensa for Kids, yet, you are in for a treat. It’s free and this page includes twelve poems for kids to memorize along with study units.
