When my kids were little, we didn’t realize we were homeschooling. They loved learning and I was constantly on the hunt that would keep their little hands busy and their minds engaged, and not be boring for me! I designed this to give kids help in important areas, such as scissor skills and pencil holding and fine motor skills. We really struggled with those two things for my son who is on the spectrum, and was premie so those fine motor skills were a challenge.

But! I also put in the games and activities that kids love, and can help parents from nodding off with yet another preschool/kindergarten activity!

How The Very Hungry Caterpillar Printable Helps

The patterns can help build a strong foundation in math, critical thinking and more. The many cutting exercises helps children to understand the independent movements of each finger. It also works on bilateral coordination (I think I may need to get out the scissors myself!) when you have to hold the scissors in one hand, a piece of paper in the other and figure out how to cut. When working with scissors, kids are understanding the separation of two sides. Scissor work also strengthens those hand muscles.

Memory games are still a go-to in our regular gameschool. It improves concentration, attention and focus. It also helps with critical thinking and lets kids nurture their attention to detail. Visual recognition and short-term memory are also strengthened.

My twins loved tracing, and I loved it because it kept them busy. But! Tracing helps them with their pre-writing skills. Trace the lines before moving onto the Hungry Caterpillar’s favorite words to say, spell and trace.

The pattern pages can help children with the basic foundation of math. Being able to recognize and create patterns help them make predictions based on their observations and make connections.

Tips to Use this Printable

Use it all at once or put just a few pages in your busy basket each day. Split it up into subjects, such as tracing, memory game, pattern work. Or take a sheet from each subject and make mini units for littles. If you have a reluctant learner that day who just can’t get into work, a few coloring pages may spark their creativity.

Trace the lines and say the words out loud. Follow that up with tracing the letters to spell the words of the objects.
